Small company. Large whiteboard.

Useful software for gloriously complicated problems.

Productive Tangent makes thoughtful tools for creative work, game masters, and the wonderfully messy stretch between an idea and a system that actually helps.

01 Find the real problem
02 Take the useful detour
03 Make it earn its pixels

Estimated arrival: when it’s genuinely useful.

Good ideas rarely travel in straight lines.

Current tangents

Things with names, code, and strong opinions.

Two active products, each built around a real person trying to keep hold of a complicated world.

Canonex

The Virtual GM Screen.

A desktop workspace that handles the Game Master’s attention while the VTT handles the game world. Summon, arrange, connect, collapse, and dismiss campaign information without losing the table.

Arcanum

A local-first personal command center.

Projects own the work. A shared Sanctum keeps the important pieces visible. Vox can understand and help with the workspace—without handing the keys to the whole machine to a mystery cloud.

Our highly scientific method*

Make the useful thing. Keep the weird part.

  1. 01

    Start with the actual mess.

Real work is lumpy. We learn the shape before we build the container.

  2. 02

Keep the person in the loop.

Software should support judgment, not cosplay as it.

  3. 03

    Prefer inspectable and reversible.

If a tool acts on your world, you should be able to see what happened and undo it.

  4. 04

    Earn the complexity.

Prototype the defining experience first. Add machinery only when the work asks for it.

The next bit is still being drawn

Productive Tangent is the umbrella for Canonex, Arcanum, and whatever earns the next wildcard.

We’re building in public eventually. First, we’re building something worth showing.
